Lupetin would agree you have to come to a\nshow to find out. Going strong into their second decade after starting from a humble\nCraigslist ad posted in bohemian Venice Beach\, some woulr say Dustbowl’s energetic\ncollective (there have been nearly thirty members!) plays a spicy cocktail of folky-funk\nor booty-shaking jangly rock n’ soul: expertly mixing their New Orleans-tinted brass\nsection with their signature Laurel Canyon harmonies and fearless lyrics.\nWhile most bands stay in one lane or fade away quickly\, Dustbowl Revival is a\ntestament to building a fanbase and their own sound the old-fashioned way\, with hard\nwork and moving songs that stick to your bones when you leave the concert. There’s a\nreason they continue to get written up in Rolling Stone and Billboard and get played on\nAAA radio 18+ years after they set sail.\nAfter releasing seven acclaimed albums starting in 2008\, including their beloved live\nrecord With A Lampshade On (2015) recorded mostly at their LA homebase the famed\nTroubadour\, and their charting self-titled record (2017) produced by Grammy-winner\nTed Hutt (Flogging Molly\, Old Crow Medicine Show)\, perhaps their magnum opus is\n2020’s deeply personal Is It You\, Is It Me – produced by Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive\,\nJosh Ritter). It showcases their penchant for orchestral brass and intricate string work\nwith politically-charged story-songs that unfold like mini-movies. \nIt’s not surprising that Z. Lupetin was an award-winning playwright and moved to LA\nfrom Chicago with everything he owned in the back of his Saab hatchback to be a\nscript writer before music took the reins.\nWhile the group has a reputation for leading joyful horn-blasted mini parades off the\nstage and sometimes rig out of the venue\, it’s the storytelling that keeps folks coming\nback. “Get Rid Of You”\, an ode to the courageous kids in Parkland\, FL who stood up to\ndemand common-sense control laws be passed is a heart-wrenching staple of each\nshow and “Get Right” – a new stomp blues that will be a part of their upcoming 2026\nrecord\, confronts the vigilante justice that exists throughout our country head on.\nWhile staying proudly independent\, the band has garnered over twenty million streams\nand counting – with romantic jams like “Honey\, I Love You” (featuring bluesmaster Keb’\nMo’) and fan favorites like the intense love song “Sonic Boom” and universal\nhealthcare ode “Debtors Prison” leading the charge. \nMany first learned about the band after the now 100-year old legend (and fan of the\ngroup) Dick Van Dyke let the gang shoot a music video with him dancing in his\nsignature straw hat at his house; the quirky jam to “Never Had To Go” went viral\, being \nseen over five million times\, while being featured on an HBO documentary about aging\nwith joy. A new Hollywood collab is on the way too: funnyman Ed Helms (who once\nhired the band to play his wedding) will join the band on his banjo in the song “Tall\nTales” which will be on the new record as well. A special cameo from Vulfpeck’s Theo\nKatzman on the spooky “Change Your Mind” will also come out soon.\nIt hasn’t always been easy – being a 7-8 piece band during the upheaval caused by the\npandemic did make some in the band move on – but it also brought in a new\nsupercharged group of amazing players. Powerhouse Lashon Halley and more recently\nAlex Nester on vocals reshaped the sound as did Chad Richard on electric guitar and\nNick Phakpiseth on bass\, and the group still features longtime brass players like Ulf\nBjorlin\, Vikram Devasthali and new trumpet masters Mike Jones\, Austin Drake\, Max\nO’leary and more. The original drummer Josh Heffernan has kept the heartbeat going\nfor nearly 15 years as well as special guest Michael Villiers to round out the band. Even\ntheir original lady singer Caitlin Doyle\, who joined after one of the original Craigslist ads\nwent live all those years ago – is back in the fold behind the mic.\nAfter throwing five of own Sway At Home Festivals during the pandemic to keep the joy\ngoing\, and creating their own in person gathering Sonic Boom Fest in the hills above \nMalibu\, 2022 and 2023 brought fresh music with their Set Me Free EP and highly-\nplaylisted folk singles “Beside You” and “The Exception” which features Grammy-\nnominated The Secret Sisters from Muscle Shoals. Life has continued to spill into the \nmusic along the way: Lupetin became a dad and nearly lost his wife to a harrowing\nmedical incident – and the track “Be (For July)” and its emotional music video brought\nin new listeners from around the globe – with the new album cut “Mr. Steady” taking\nthe emotions with strings from original member Connor Vance to the next level.\nA summer staple on the festival circuit\, notable appearances include Hardly Strictly\nBluegrass in San Francisco\, Bottle Rock in Napa\, Rhythm N Roots in Rhode Island\,\nWaterfront Blues in Portland\, The Cambridge Folk Fest in England and Tonder Festival\nin Denmark to highlight a few of their favorite stops with a new tour in England on the\nway this summer. An eye-opening state-department tour of China was also undertaken\,\nprompting a funny mini documentary on Youtube.\nDustbowl does like to pay homage to their heroes with special concept shows now and\nagain: the group first completed a successful run of performing art centers paying the\nmusic of The Band (Robbie Robertson even sent a signed vinyl as a thank you) and in\n2024-2025 Dustbowl is embarked on a run of theaters and festivals showcasing the\nmusic of LA’s Laurel Canyon. A brassy Beatles cover of “Oh! Darling” was shared\nfeaturing Ivan Neville on organ and the band released the politically charged “The\nTruth” confronting the overturning of Roe V Wade. Recorded in cabin studio in\nWisconsin with noted engineer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver\, Sufjan Stevens) – it is a preview\nof their upcoming record CHANGE YOUR MIND. \nHowever you sip their sound\, Dustbowl Revival has become a beloved fixture of the\nAmericana community – from playing tiny speakeasies and pubs around their southern\nCalifornia base\, to headlining thousands of shows in ten countries and counting. \nIndeed\, founder Z. Lupetin’s quixotic Craigslist ad hoping to find like-minded music-\nmakers to play songs inspired equally by Wilco\, Bob Dylan and Springsteen as Nina \nSimone\, Fleetwood Mac and Bill Withers may seem confusing\, but somehow it’s\nworked.\n“Maybe we don’t know where this journey will take us or how long it will last\,”\nacknowledges Lupetin\, “That’s my take on the importance of what we try to do. DESCRIPTION:Andre Nickatina first appeared on the Bay Area rap scene in 1993 underneath the stage name Dre Dog. He released two albums under the stage name Dre Dog: The New Jim Jones in 1993 and I Hate You With a Passion in 1995. I Hate You With a Passion peaked at #79 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. In 1997\, Adams changed his stage name to Andre Nickatina\, and released the albums: Cocaine Raps under his own label\, Filmoe Coleman Records and Raven in My Eyes\, which was released under the Bay Area Independent Rap Label Dogday Records. Unlike his albums released under the name Dre Dog\, Cocaine Raps had deeper production values [First Collaborations with Producer Nick Peace]. The album Raven in My Eyes was noted for its production quality and songs that combine “sequencers and keyboards that buzz and whine” with live instrumentation.] That year\, he founded his own record label\, Filmoe Coleman Records. Nickatina explained in an interview with Strivin magazine that his name change was “for the better” and that he raps because he feels that he is talented enough to do so but not for the sake of popularity. \nSoon afterwards\, his following three albums\, Tears of a Clown (1999)\, Daiquiri Factory: Cocaine Raps\, Vol. 2\, The Unreleased [Sold exclusively at shows and appearances] and These R the Tales (the latter three in 2000) gained him notoriety in the West Coast underground rap scene. Mosi Reeves of the San Francisco Bay Guardian noted Nickatina’s popularity at a CD release party for another underground Bay Area rapper/producer\, Smoov-E; Reeves called Nickatina “a quick-witted rapper who spits as hard as Kurupt does”.] A combo CD/movie project\, Conversation with a Devil\, followed in 2003.] Lindsay Welnick\, a music critic for SF Weekly\, regarded the film as a knockoff of the classic gangster movie Scarface.] Nate Denver for the SF Bay Guardian praised the album\, though. Another album\, The Gift followed in 2005\, when the newspaper SF Weekly named Nickatina the “Best Local Hip Hop Legend” of that year. That same year\, he would collaborate with Ilych Sato\, better known as Equipto\, for his 14th studio album titled “Horns and Halos”\, which would be accompanied by two sequels later that year and in the following year. Also\, in 2005\, Nickatina won the first annual Bay Area Raps Awards for Best Underground Artist. In 2008\, he released A Tale of Two Andres with Mac Dre.
