“John would have wanted the record to come out. The music was what was important to him, and he would have wanted us to keep going.” — The Effigies drummer Steve Economou
The new album from The Effigies begins, unfortunately, with a moment of tragedy. Just as the long-running and influential Chicago punk band was finishing its fifth album Burned in late 2023, singer John Kezdy was killed in a biking accident.
Reaction from the music world was swift. “John Kezdy was a hero of mine,” Steve Albini wrote on social media immediately following Kezdy’s passing. “Effigies were the first great band from Chicago’s scene, his stern, declamatory style influenced a generation and he helped me in material ways. Not overstating to say that without John and the Effigies, I would never have made any records.”
While The Effigies were never the biggest band in the punk world, they were an important one. The group — which featured rotating guitarists but primarily consisted of Kezdy, bassist Paul Zamost, and drummer Steve Economou — formed in 1980 and released four full-length records and a few EPs over the course of their on-and-off history, all while touring with the likes of Black Flag, the Dead Kennedys, Naked Raygun (which featured John’s brother Pierre), and even pre-fame Green Day.
Most importantly, the band helped punk thrive in their hometown of Chicago in the early ‘80s, where the scene was smaller and more insular. “That early Chicago scene — there was a collective consciousness there,” says Economou. “It was Steve Albini, Naked Raygun, Strike Under. We all had our roles — sound, promotions, t-shirts. It was a collective scene from the beginning. We held it together until the next generation of bands hit and the crowds got bigger.” (During this time, the band also founded and released their music on Ruthless Records, an influential punk label that also featured albums by Naked Raygun, Big Black, and Urge Overkill, among others.)
A smaller local scene may have kept The Effigies from reaching the heights of some of their peers. But the band’s unwillingness to fit into a predetermined genre or musical category also played a role. “There was no scene for us,” admits Economou. “But what was great was how diverse the Chicago scene was. We were all very different from each other.” In a 2015 interview, Kezdy — eschewing the term “hardcore” — noted that “we tried to write real songs but they had the punk energy. I don’t mind if people call us a punk band because that’s what we’ve always been. I don’t mean to be presumptuous, but the lineage of The Effigies has always been more along the lines of the Sex Pistols, the Stranglers, the Ruts and that kind of stuff.”
That said, you’ll notice a consistency from The Effigies through every release, including the new album. Burned, the band’s first record since 2007’s Reside, was produced and recorded by Andy Gerber (a longtime friend of the band who also plays guitars on parts of the album) and mixed by J. Robbins. It’s aggressive but melodic, with Kezdy’s wry, political, and often personal commentary at the forefront.
“It’s John’s best work,” says Zamost. “And I think it’s consistent with our other music because the music’s always been written around me and Steve, the rhythm section. It defined our sound.”
Along with a new record comes a 40th anniversary re-release of the band’s classic album For Ever Grounded, which has been remixed and remastered. “We’d record the early records very quickly, sneaking into studios and pretty much laying ‘em down over a weekend,” says Economou.

Green Jellÿ (/gri?n 'd??lo?/, green Jell-O) is an American comedy rock band formed in 1981. Originally named Green Jellö, the band changed its name due to legal pressure from Kraft Foods Inc., the owners of the Jell-O brand, who claimed that it was an infringement of their trademark.
Known for sophomoric humor, theatrical performances, and intentionally crude musicianship, Green Jellÿ has had hundreds of members during its existence, with vocalist Bill Manspeaker the only consistent member throughout. Notable past members include Danny Carey and Maynard James Keenan, who were both in Green Jellÿ during the early 1990s and went on to form Tool.
To date, the band has released five studio albums: Triple Live Möther Gööse at Budokan (1989), Cereal Killer Soundtrack (1993), 333 (1994), Musick to Insult Your Intelligence By (2009), and Garbage Band Kids (2021). They are best known for their 1992 hit "Three Little Pigs", which was adapted from the fairy tale.

Audio Karate comprised childhood friends from Rosemead, CA: vocalist/guitarist Art Barrios, bassist/vocalist Justo Gonzalez, drummer Gabriel Camacho and guitarist Jason Camacho (those last two being cousins). They all bonded over a shared love of both '80s skatepunk and '70s metal, and in May 2002, released their debut of furiously catchy SoCal pop-punk via Kung Fu Records titled Space Camp. Tour dates with acts like the ataris, tsunami bomb and the vandals followed, as did a stretch on the 2004 Warped Tour. Audio Karate's Warped appearance was well timed, coinciding with the June release of their matured (and very well-received) follow-up, Lady Melody, which was produced by Bill Stevenson (descendants all, etc). More touring was completed before the guys announced at year's end that they would be taking a "vacation" for an undisclosed amount of time. Audio Karate resurfaced in the spring of 2006 with the notice that they were working on a new album, in addition to writing the score and soundtrack -- music much different than their past efforts -- for the Spanish language independent film, Maquillaje. In the meantime, Jason Camacho had also opened his own studio Lady Melody, named after the band's 2004 album.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Rose_(band)
An emo-influenced pop-punk band from New Jersey, Tokyo Rose was formed in 2001, while singer and guitarist Ryan Dominguez and bassist Chris Poulsen were both students at Rutgers University. Though both were playing with other bands, the two shared similar musical interests and decided to launch a band of their own. Tokyo Rose played local shows when the members' busy schedules permitted and they booked tours to coincide with vacations and between-term breaks. Tokyo Rose also recorded a self-released EP, Chasing Fireflies, which became the band's calling card after Dominguez and Poulsen graduated and made the band a full-time priority.
In 2003, during a tour of California, the band signed a deal with the independent label Sidecho Records, who released the group's first full-length album, Reinventing a Lost Art, in July 2003. Extensive touring followed, including playing the 2003 CMJ Festival, the 2004 South by Southwest Music Conference, and the 2004 Warped Tour. In 2005, after returning home from a tour of Japan, Tokyo Rose began work on their second album, New American Saint, which was released in October 2005. Their second album featured Fred Mascherino of Taking Back Sunday on the track "A Reason to Come Home Again" and was released on October 4, 2005 and landed them tours with Bayside, Taking Back Sunday, as well as performing on the 2006 Vans Warped Tour.

Inspiration comes full circle. Sixteen years since Watashi Wa’s last release, a confluence of creativity, circumstances, and trust revitalizes, re-energizes, and reignites the acclaimed California band founded and fronted by singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer Seth Roberts. Joined by Jeremy Wells , Miles Castenholtz , Teddy Ramirez , Roger Tompkins , and Tyler Tedeschi , Seth has crafted the right music for the right time on the band’s long-awaited fourth full-length offering, People Like People .
“It was the right time,” he affirms.“ I felt called to do Watashi Wa again—as if this was what I was supposed to be doing. In the past, it was often difficult. Now, the songs came out easily. When I was writing, it just was Watashi Wa. These days, my perspective on music is similar to the freedom I had when I was younger and first started the band. Things in the world pushed me towards it even more. I thought, ‘Why not just do Watashi Wa again?’”
Why not indeed…
